30.01.99 BURNLEY / MECHANICS HALL DENNIS was dynamite...............and whipped his audience into a frenzy. He was in town as part of the Love Songs Tour and to see if he still has what it takes and from the "sell-out" signs and the noise from the audience he still has. How he reached those high notes - and held them - without being squeezed I'll never know! Dennis opened up to rapturous applause from the packed theatre......I think he was pleased to be there as the audience were to have him.......After almost two hours the audience clapped stamped their feet and shouted for more, he came back on stage to sing "Sylvia's Mother", but the crowd still weren't happy - not until they heard one final song from The Voice of Doctor Hook! 02.02.99 LONDON / THE BORDERLINE..a voice that sounds as good on stage as it ever did on the old records.....He makes no bones that this is about Love Songs...but gives the impression that he'd be just as happy breaking out into a more natural rocking country....including latter-day Dr Hook guitarist and regular collaborator Rod Smarr...when the band rocked on a couple of numbers such as Queen Of The Silver Dollar, it really rocked......And the man did work, almost two hours without a break...on the basis of this performance he's got what it takes and more. Nick Dalton Country Music International April Issue. ... |
| 09.02..99 SALISBURY / CITY HALL We knew we would be hearing great songs, but what a bonus it was to be treated to the humour of Dennis Locorriere. He loved the audience and we loved him as he talked to us like we were old friends, sharing jokes and stories....it was treat after treat as both new material and classics thrilled everyone. All ages loved the show with great music that somehow sounded even better than the records. Jenny Boyce Sallisbury Journal..18.02.99 ........ |
| 16.02.99 HALIFAX / VICTORIA THEATRE ....Locorriere remains faithful to the memorable sounds which he is able to reproduce as the original lead vocalist and guitarist and helped to earn Dr Hook more than 60 gold and platinum albums. He was the front man on all the big hits.....When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman, performed to a powerful beat and some driving guitar from Nashville based ex Dr Hook member Rod Smarr.... Gordon Sampson Halifax Courier 17.02.99 ....... |
| 14.03.99 FELIXSTOWE / PAVILLION THEATRE ....It may be 15 years since Dennis last did a tour of this size but he has lost none of his energy, enthusiasm and rapport with his audience. And he still has some excellent songs to sing......Dennis had the crowd in the palm of his hand...Hit after hit was greeted with cheers, and the solo material was received as well as the classics...there was plenty of humour too...More than two hours after he and his band took to the stage it was over - way too soon...leaving the stage to a well deserved standing ovation. The doctor may not be on call any more, but The Voice is definitely back. Rachel Banham Eve |
| 15&16.03.99 BIRMINGHAM / RONNIE SCOTT'S ....events have shown during this lengthy nation-wide tour just how popular the former lead vocalist/guitarist of the 70's and 80's chart-toppers remains.....Dennis worked his way effortlessly through the many Dr Hook hits......during the two sets the atmosphere was relaxed, whilst the performance was slick and totally professional..........Dennis was delighted at the audiences reaction to two new songs......I Think I'm In Love and Happy Ever After Love. Another delight was a beautiful song about Dennis's son Jesse called Shine Son. By the time the audience went home....they were rightly convinced Dennis is not part of a tribute band and indeed is the distinctive voice of Dr Hook ..... Stephen King The Birmingham Post 17.03.99. ........... |
| 17.03.99 STRATFORD UPON AVON / CIVIC HALL .....the man that was the driving force behind the band's successes in the '70's has recharged his batteries and in a way which makes Lazarus's second -coming seem like a cheap publicity stunt.....The amiably loquacious Locorriere charmed an adoring audience with an incredible set. His bell like voice rang around the hall with the clarity of a choir of angels. He gave his fans exactly what they came to see and hear - the complete gamut of the group's '70's roster of monster hits..........they are all stamped with Locorriere's masterful, plaintiff tone........The most endearing facet of Locorriere's ebullient stage presence is his modesty and enthusiasm......behind the overtly romantic balladeer lies the rocker desperately trying to get out......A man who once thought about retirement, and then thought again, is back on the road. Thank the lord for that. Dean Bartram Herald 25.03.99. Guernsey Press ......... |
| 18.06.1999 . when the former Dr Hook frontman burst onto the stage at 9pm, a fantastic two hours of foot-tapping, arm waving and singing along began. Locorriere performed an incredible 21 songs on the night and although his backing group took a couple of breaks along the way, he remained on stage strong voiced and energetic to the end. He may have clocked up more than half a century but the years have been kind during his retirement in Nashville Tennessee with Locorriere retaining the looks and energy of a man half his age.....Locorriere soon had audience-paricipatio-a-plenty - with most of us easily recalling thr lyrics of such classics as Sharing the Night Together, More Like the Movies, Sleeping Late, Sexy Eyes, A Little Bit More and When You’re In Love With A Beautiful Woman. A few new tracks and some lesser known Dr Hook numbers interspersed the Hits – in particular The Queen of the Silver Dollar giving Locorriere and his band the opportunity to demonstrate their mastery of their respective instruments. .......the great man was not slow to acknowledge where much of the credit for the band’s success belonged. Many of their hits were penned by Shel Silverstein, who died just a few weeks ago, and Locorriere paid warm tribute to his co-songwriter and a friend. It was the first Silverstein/Hook smash hit in 1972, Sylvia’s Mother, that began a two-song encore by Locorriere, who ended the evening with a tear jerking rendition of Years from now.Local 30 to 50-something music fans should be grateful to promoter John Hassenthaler for the quality of acts that he brings to the island. | 18.06.1999 He sings of Sexy Eyes but its Dennis Locorriere’s sexy voice that is his trademark. As lead vocalist with Dr Hook in the seventies and eighties, Dennis took his band to the top of the charts with a string of songs which still hit all the right notes today. On Monday night he played to a gathering of loyal fans at Oxford’s Apollo Theatre, like Dennis said, the venue was a little large for the audience, but each and every one was a Dr Hook connoisseur. What they lacked in numbers they made up for in enthusiasm as Dennis crooned like there was no tomorrow. And the guy certainly gave them their money’s worth. From A Little Bit More and If Not You to When You’re In Love With A Beautiful Woman and the classic Sylvia’s Mother, Dennis Locorriere The Voice Of Dr Hook, offered fans all the old favourites. That unique voice of his was every bit as good and spine-tingling as when I listened to him as a teenager 25 years ago. He poured boundless energy, enthusiasm and effort into his performance and didn’t leave the stage once in a set that lasted more than two hours. Now that’s staying power... And there were plenty of new songs too from his latest The Love Songs Album and a nice moment when he received a gold disc from his record company EMI for reaching sales of 100,00. Dennis had a distinguished backing line-up which included Benny Gallagher of Gallagher & Lyle on guitar and Dire Straits drummer Pick Withers All in all a great night of rekindled memories and confirmation that oldies really are golden. | 25.06.99 Still keen to please ....the two hour plus set comprised mostly of Dennis's string of hits from his days as lead singer and songwriter with the top group Dr Hook. However, he did also include a few tracks from his forthcoming solo album. It would seem from the reaction to these new songs that his career is heading for a huge resurgence in popularity. Enthusiasm If he releases the fabulous Shine Son as a single, I forecast his name will become known far beyond the confines of the Dr Hook fan base. In the intervening years since the group split (in 1985) Dennis appears to have lost none of his enthusiasm for music and his voice retains all of its unique cadence. This was a fabulous evening of entertainment and despite the long set, I would happily have sat there all night listening to his wonderful voice and his superb songs. ....I hope Dennis keeps his word and comes back for another tour before too long - LCK . |
