Dennis Locorriere *** One of the Lucky Ones

Elegant country-soul from a master of the craft.

For years Locorriere has worked patiently to break free of the shackles set around him by his membership of semi-comic rock combo Dr Hook, and this might be the album that will finally put him where he belongs, up there with along with some of the finest singer-songwriters to have emerged in the 1970's. Possessed of a blue-eyed soul voice that stands comparison with Smokey Robinson, but flavoured with lazy country-rock echos of John Sebastian, he peppers his songs idiosyncratic growls, giggles and impassioned roars that bring every word to life. Songs like Guess Again and Somewhere Round Here are immaculately crafted artifacts, and even his occassional slips into shameless sentimentality are rendered enjoyable by the sheer panache of his vocal technique. When a hot oil massage isn't on the cards, this is the perfect furrowed brow smoother after a long day.
